ATLAS College & Career Readiness Symposium
Advancing Tomorrow’s Leaders in STEM (ATLAS) is a college and career readiness symposium that provides a space for students typically underrepresented in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) to connect with business leaders, colleges, government, and potential employers.
Since 2013 MdBio has hosted six ATLAS events, engaging over 1,000 participants in meaningful dialogues about STEM career options and the educational pathways required to reach those career goals.
Emergent Volunteers spent the day educating and motivating students who may want to pursue a career in science. We did not only advise the students on the importance of obtaining a college education but getting real world experiences as well to better themselves for the future. Overall, the event was a great success. Many students visited our booth to seek important information that could potentially benefit them for a lifetime.
Siloam Mission Winnipeg
Since 1987, Siloam Mission has provided meals, clothing, and hope services to Winnipeg’s poor and homeless community. Siloam Mission programs and volunteers support the health, growth, skill development and transition for our less fortunate. In the last year alone, over 100 people transitioned from living on the street to having a place to live, with hundreds more finding shelter, clothing, vision care, dental care and job opportunities.
Emergent Winnipeg has been partnering with Siloam Mission Winnipeg for many years, through financial donations and team volunteer events. Over this time, our employee volunteers have participated in donation sorting, serving meals, baking and donating in drives for food and essential personal items. Emergent is also proud to sponsor and organize the annual BackPack campaign, where each of the 110 patrons, on Christmas Day, receive a backpack stuffed with some of the essential items for daily living and each of the 85 people in transitional housing receives a unique gift to support their needs.
Emergent is committed and proud to have a long-term partnership with Siloam Mission. In each event, we see firsthand how impactful our donations and time are, how grateful everyone is and the difference that is being made.
Children’s Hospital Foundation Manitoba
The Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba is dedicated to ensuring that every child treated at the Children’s Hospital – Health Sciences Centre Winnipeg receives the best medical care possible. The Foundation raises and distributes funds for the advancement of knowledge and care in the fields of child health research and, thereby, contributes to the improved health of children everywhere.
Emergent is a long-time supporter and sponsor of the annual Teddy Bear’s Picnic, volunteering and teaching children through our Paws for Prevention tent. This forum allows us to play a role in educating children on ways to prevent the spread of germs and stay healthy. Through fun games, books and activities our volunteers have an amazing time with the children, all while generating funds to support the research being done.
Through the Teddy Bear’s Picnic, the Toy Drive and the donation of items to the neo-natal unit, we feel connected to the Children’s Hospital and the Foundation, and are grateful for everything that they and our employees do for this partnership.
Sheridan Road School
Sheridan Road School is a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) magnet school in the Lansing School District. Because of its close proximity to Emergent’s Lansing campus, and its STEM designation, it has become a favorite among Emergent volunteers.
In the spring of this year, several Emergent employees volunteered to help a 6th grade class with a sheep brain dissection. Though Emergent employees have backgrounds in various types of science, the volunteers guided the students through the dissection.
“Engaging with the students during the sheep brain dissection was my favorite eGIVE activity thus far because I was able to interact with students doing something we both really enjoyed. I have a biology background, and the girls were surprised to see a woman who isn’t grossed out by science!” – Sara Miller
USO Operation Back 2 School
For nearly 75 years, the USO has been the nation’s leading organization to serve the men and women in the U.S. military and their families, throughout their time in uniform. From the moment they join, through their assignments and deployments, and as they transition back to their communities. As a congressionally chartered, private organization, the USO relies on the generosity of individuals, organizations and corporations to support its activities, and is powered by a family of volunteers to accomplish their mission of connection.
Every summer, the USO hosts “Operation Back to School” a fun one-day program for military children ages 5 – 12. The kids participate in activities that incorporate core subjects such as reading, math, science, history, art and athletics. To top it off, everyone receives a backpack stuffed with new school supplies. With our corporate USO partnership, Operation Back to School is an Emergent sponsored event as part of our eGIVE program.
The USO is truly an amazing organization and will continue to strengthen America’s military service members by keeping them connected to family, home and country, throughout their service to the nation. At Emergent, we will continue to partner with organizations committed to enhancing the health and well-being of active military, veterans, first responders and their families.
Capital Area Humane Society
The Capital Area Humane Society is a favorite among Emergent’s Lansing employees. Volunteer days spent here are often used as team building activities. Time spent at CAHS can involve a myriad of chores, from cleaning animal kennels, to grooming animals, to taking the shelter dogs for a walk.
“Volunteering with my team at CAHS was a great team building event. Under the direction of their experienced volunteers, we were able to complete tasks for the shelter that were needed, but a lower priority for them; something as simple as organizing their tools and miscellaneous parts makes their jobs easier. Plus every volunteer opportunity ends with us being able to spend time with the dogs and cats!” – Jessica, Emergent Employee Volunteer
Holiday Help for Heroes
Each year, the Emergent’s Lansing site participates in Holiday Help for Heroes, a program through the Michigan National Guard that connects organizations with soldiers who need a little extra support around the holiday season. The organizations collect gifts, clothing and general household supplies to donate to the soldier and their families.
In 2015, Emergent adopted five National Guard families! Members of the family ranged from newborn to adulthood.
“Our primary customer at Emergent is the men and women who protect our nation. The Holiday Help for Heroes program is neat because it allows us another opportunity to help the people who serve our country every day.” – Alyssa Sherman
