Emergent BioSolutions Appoints A.B. Cruz III as Executive Vice President and General Counsel

ROCKVILLE, Md.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Nov. 26, 2013– Emergent BioSolutions Inc. (NYSE:EBS) announced today the appointment of A.B. Cruz III as executive vice president and general counsel responsible for managing all legal matters involving securities, corporate, and regulatory transactions, and advising senior management on strategic and business issues. He will also serve as the chief compliance officer, responsible for overseeing the risk and compliance systems and policies for the company’s global operations, as well as the corporate secretary to the board of directors. Cruz, who recently retired as a rear admiral in the U.S. Navy Reserve, will report to Daniel J. Abdun-Nabi, Emergent’s president and chief executive officer.

Cruz most recently served as reserve deputy director of maritime operations at U.S. Fleet Forces Command in Norfolk, VA. From 2008 to 2012, he served as chief legal officer and corporate secretary of Scripps Networks Interactive and from 2004 to 2008, as executive vice president and general counsel of The E. W. Scripps Company. He was vice president, deputy general counsel, and assistant secretary at BET Holdings Inc. from 1999 to 2004. Previous to that, he represented various clients for several well-established law firms in Washington, D.C.

Cruz graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1980 and held progressive positions during his tour on board USS Gray, a Navy frigate. In 1984, he served as an admissions officer and congressional liaison officer at the U.S. Naval Academy and in 1986, he accepted a commission in the U.S. Navy Reserve. Cruz held numerous operational and staff positions in the special operations and special warfare areas, including multiple tours of duty within the Navy Expeditionary Combat Enterprise and Naval Special Warfare community. His first assignment as a flag officer was as deputy commander, U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command and deputy commander, U.S. 4th Fleet in Mayport, FL.

In his distinguished 33-year navy career, Cruz was awarded multiple Legion of Merit Medals, Meritorious Service Medals, Navy Commendation and Achievement Medals, and the Commander-in-Chief Pacific Fleet’s Shiphandler-of-the-Year Award.

Cruz holds a master’s degree in marketing from the University of Maryland and a juris doctorate degree from The Columbus School of Law at The Catholic University of America.
