Business Operations Update
GAITHERSBURG, Md., March 8, 2024 – Emergent is proud of its more than twenty-year partnership with the United States government to develop and deliver medical countermeasures (MCMs) to address a host of threats, including anthrax, smallpox and chemical attacks. Since 2001, Emergent has provided protection for civilian and military populations across numerous CBRN threats for pre- and post-event settings.
We recognize that the U.S. government is balancing multiple threat preparedness needs with the level of funding provided by Congress and that this fact could impact the magnitude and timing of anthrax procurements in the near term even as this potential threat remains a top strategic priority.
As a result of this lack of clarity from the U.S. government related to the timing and scale of CYFENDUS® vaccine procurement, which is indicated for post-exposure prophylaxis during an emergency involving anthrax, Emergent is implementing a furlough program for approximately 130 employees at our facility in Lansing beginning Saturday, March 9.
This is a decision Emergent did not make lightly. We are committed to working with Emergent employees affected and making decisions as to next steps regarding the future of the facility as soon as possible.
